villas-in-lanzaroteThe Canary Islands have long been perceived as a cheap and cheerful Holiday choice in the UK.  But these seven islands are not all birds of a feather.  As Lanzarote, the most easterly link in the chain, offers a host of unique visitor attractions as well as great beaches and weather.

Places To Stay

The majority of the islands best hotels are located in the newest resort of Playa Blanca.  Which is right at the southern tip of Lanzarote.  However a growing number of visitors prefer to construct their own holiday online.  Booking villas in Lanzarote and organising their flights direct online.

Villa rental properties start at around £350 per week for a standard two bedroom property with private pool.  Whilst apartments in Lanzarote can be rented from as little as £180 per week.

Getting There

Lanzarote is four hours flying time from the UK.  Which is the largest tourist market for the island.  Accounting for around 60% of the 1.5 million foreign visitors who spent their holidays in Lanzarote during 2008.

Arrecife airport is the sole international airport on the island.  And is located around 3km from the island capital of the same name.

Getting Around

Car hire is cheap and readily available on Lanzarote.  With prices starting from as little as €15 per day.  Petrol is also much more affordable than in the UK.

Key Attractions

The island boasts some unique volcanic scenery.  The legacy of a series of intense eruptions.  With the Timanfaya Volcano Park the number one visitor attraction on the island.

An island born artist, Cesar Manrique also created a series of tourist sites on the island.  Such as the Jameos del Agua, Mirador del Rio and the Cactus Garden.  All of which feature prominently on the itineraries of most visitors.

There are lots of picturesque towns and villages to explore too.  Such as the former island capital of Teguise.  Home to some great examples of traditional Canarian architecture and buildings dating back to the 1450´s.  Or the picture postcard perfect village of Yaiza.  Known locally as the Miracle Village as this is the point where the lava flows from nearby Timanfaya finally came to a halt.

Best Beaches

Beach lovers are spoilt for choice on Lanzarote.  As the island has over 90 fine stretches of sand.  Such as the pretty village beach at Arrieta and the impressive 8km long bay at Famara.
